Neither they were too much optimized with SEO. I think, it will take some time for google to tweak its algorithm to find out the bad sites from good sites. As of now many good sites are also hit by this update.
2. Recovery from google penalties take time and there is no shortcut.
3. Now onward, Webmaster can opt for Partial Match Domains instead of Exact Match Domains.
4. Instead of seeing this as penalty, we can say that the advantage of having keywords in the domain name has been taken away by google.
